Student teachers visit Light & Schools

More than 15 student teachers from all over Hamburg visited Light & Schools to peak into the school lab on Campus Bahrenfeld and get an impression of its possibilities.

Physics student Bastian Besner represented CUI-coordinators Dortje Schirok and Dr. Thomas Garl and informed about the Light & Schools’ program and its offerings for secondary and sixth form pupils. “Besides the supervision of bachelor and master-thesis, the focus of Light & Schools lies on the idea of enhancing the pupil’s scientific thinking and capability of experimental work,” says Besner. “Moreover the experiments are easy to adapt as a practical part into the regular physics lessons,” Besner explained the student teachers who visited Light & Schools for the first time.

After a lab tour CUI scientist Dr. Philipp Wessels gave insight into the actual research in the field of ultracold quantum gases. “I learned a lot about an exciting and diverse program for my pupils,” a student teacher said. One of the eight female student teachers added: “The program is well structured and organized, I like that very much.”

Besner: “We dismissed our guests after three hours with a lot of new input for their lessons and we would be happy to work with more new school classes in our school lab. The Light & Schools’ program is quite diverse – pupils of grade 7 and 8 can expect experiments regarding liquid-crystal displays with the possibility to build their own. Another project covers the programming of an app for mobile phones. Furthermore, students learn a lot about GPS-navigation and how to use a GPS advice for geocaching. Middle school students of grades 9 and 10 deal with the question „What are colors from a physical perspective?“. Senior grades gain insights into the characteristics of laser light.

Even after graduation from school it is possible to be supported by Light & Schools within the frame of the teacher training program in physics. Light & Schools supervises Master- or Bachelor theses in the fields of the Global Positioning System (GPS) or a pump-probe experiment.
