Prof. Dr. Günter Huber selected for Russian Academy of Sciences

Prof. Günter Huber has been selected as a foreign member at this year’s meeting of the Russian Academy of Sciences. With this distinction, the Academy honors the pioneering work of the CUI member in the field of applied laser physics together with his successful and lengthy cooperation with Russian laser physicists at the Prokhorov General Physics Institute in Moscow.

Günter Huber, professor at Universität Hamburg since 1982.

Prof. Huber is a specialist for new laser concepts and new materials for laser applications. His research team at the Institute of Laser Physics at Universität Hamburg develops new coherent light-sources for specific applications and investigates fundamental concepts for future photonic technologies. In this field, Prof. Huber’s team is an international leader. The development of green laser pointers and laser for minimally invasive surgery is based on his research. In honor of his achievements, the scientist has received international prices from organisations such as the Optical Society of America and the European Physical Society.

The Russian Academy of Sciences has been founded in 1724 on the order of the Russian czar Peter the Great. It comprises 13 specialized departments, three regional departments and 15 regional scientific centers. Prof. Wladimir Fortow has been elected as president in 2013.
