Weissenhäuser Strand 2014

The second winter school organized by the PhD students of CUI took place in the period December 1-5, 2014, at the Tagungscenter Weissenhäuser Strand (Baltic Sea, Germany). Planned to broaden the scientific knowledge of the participants, six experts from CUI as well as from other institutions were invited to hold a lecture. These lectures covered a variety of topics (programme): light-matter interaction, non-linear optics, molecular machines in biology, time-resolved visualization of enzymatic reactions, magnetism on the atomic scale, static and dynamic properties of ferromagnetic nanostructures. Besides this, two courses on gender studies and on ethical implications and social consequences of new technical developments have been held.

Invited speakers:

  • Prof. Dr. Christian Bressler (European XFEL GmbH, Hamburg, Germany)
  • Dr. Günter Steinmeyer (Max-Born-Institut, Berlin, Germany)
  • Prof. Dr. Hartmut Niemann (University of Bielefeld, Germany)
  • Dr. Thomas Barends (Max-Planck-Institut für medizinische Forschung, Heidelberg, Germany)
  • Dr. Riccardo Hertel (IPCMS Strasbourg, France)
  • Prof. Dr. Mathias Kläui (Johannes Gutenberg Universität Mainz, Germany)
  • Prof. Dr. Petra Lucht (Technische Universität Berlin, Germany)
  • Prof. Dr. Regine Kollek (Universität Hamburg)
Furthermore, the event was an opportunity for the PhD students and the postdoctoral researchers of CUI to learn about the different scientific projects of CUI. As in the previous edition, each student had the possibility to present her or his own scientific project in either a talk or a poster. In addition, the PhD students organised a discussion forum, where they had to identify connections between their specific research topics, also in order to better understand each others language.
All participants were happy to attend the school in particular due to the very pleasant atmosphere, as illustrated by the slide show below.
