Dr. Melanie Schnell receives Helene-Lange-Preis

CUI-Scientist Dr. Melanie Schnell has received the Helene-Lange-Preis. Since 2009 EWE-Stiftung und Universität Oldenburg give this prize to young researchers for their extraordinary accomplishments in mathematics, informatics, natural sciences and technical fields. The award is named after Helene Lange (1848-1930) of Oldenburg who was one of the most important pioneers for the education of girls and women in Germany.

„Chemist Melanie Schnell impressed the jury with her extraordinary results in research and in teaching, which she could achieve during her young career in the area of physical chemistry. Moreover, leading a Max-Planck-Research-Group is a very special scientific and personal achievement“, said Beatrix Kuhl, member of the board of EWE-Stiftung in front of 100 guest at the prize giving ceremony in Oldenburg on 23 May 2013.

Dr. Melanie Schnell specializes in the research of molecules and has already received numerous stipends and awards during her university career. From 2006 until 2011 she was member of the Junge Akademie an der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften and the Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina.

Furthermore, the scientist and mother of two children has succeeded in an exemplary manner in balancing her family with her profession, added Prof. Dr. Barbara Schwarze, member of the jury and member of Hochschule Osnabrück in her laudatory speech. The Helene-Lange-Preis outlines role models for women, who are ready to choose their field of studies, in order to balance the low numbers of young women in the field of mathematics, natural sciences or technical professions.
