Industry meets Science

49th Hanse Photonik-Forum at CUI: The Competence Centre for Optical Technologies had chosen a special place for its 49th Forum on the Campus Bahrenfeld which is marked by leading research worldwide in micro- and nanocosmos – as CUI’s scientific coordinator, Dr. Hans Behringer, put it in his welcome address.

HansePhotonic had chosen a special place for the 49th Forum.

The participants were interested in the cluster’s research projects, especially in the use of ultrashort laser systems in research and material processing. “We are pleased to be in contact with the users of photonic systems,” Prof. Klaus Sengstock said, who introduced CUI’s research activities. Following his presentation, the guests were given the opportunity to visit the labs of Prof. Franz Kärtner, Prof. Günter Huber, and Prof. R.J. Dwayne Miller in the Centre for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL) and the Center for Optical Quantum Technologies (ZOQ).

As a highlight of the afternoon, the HansePhotonik Prize 2014 was given to Sandra Krüger, development engineer of Coherent LaserSystems GmbH & Co. KG, Lübeck. HansePhotonik e.V. is a technical and scientific association which is engaged in industry, science and politics in the north of Germany in order to promote innovations and applications in the field of optical technologies. Therefore the aim of the prize is to promote knowledge and innovations in optical technologies, to support scientific and technical juniors and to strengthen networking.  The prize is presented once a year (For further information view: http://www.hansephotonik.de/text/HP-Foerderpreis_2014.pdf.)

After the ceremony Prof. Kärtner gave a talk about “Cryogenic  short pulse laser for compact X-ray sources“. Dr. –Ing. Arnold Gillner from the Fraunhofer ILT Aachen talked about „Ultrashort pulse lasers in materials science“.  A snack in the end gave the opportunity to exchange experiences in industry and science.
