Wissen vom Fass entering the third round

During the third round of „Wissen vom Fass“ at the end of April 2017, guests of about 45 bars und pubs in Hamburg again gained fascinating and sometimes even curious insights into science.“How did the universe look like in the past?,“ Prof. Jan Louis, the initiator of “Wissen vom Fass” and vice president of Universität Hamburg, asked his audience in the Wilhelmsburg Café Pause, while CUI member Prof. Horst Weller, among others, dipped into the world of nano particles in the Schellfischposten in Altona.

In addition to topics from natural sciences, the progam for the first time included humanities, law and and social sciences. Prof. Markus Kotzur from the faculty of law, for example, gave answers to current questions about Brexit, calling his talk “The pain of parting“(„Scheiden tut weh“). „In times of fake news, especially, this event shows the importance of science for society. Personally, I am very much looking forward to the exchange with the audience, its openness and its interest in our research,“ Jan Louis said prior to the event.

This year’s program and around 1800 visitors, who took the chance to dive into science under unconventional conditions, again proofed that science is fun and diverse. NDR described the event as entertaining and tasty; a guest in St. Pauli Museumsbar said: “The speakers always explain their research quite well and easy to understand. Therefore it’s always fun to participate.“ Wissen vom Fass will again take place in spring 2018.

“Wissen vom Fass” is jointly organized by DESY, CUI, the collaborative research center Particles, Strings and the Early Universe (SFB 676), the Department of Physics at Universität Hamburg, and PIER, the strategic partnership between DESY and Universität Hamburg.
