Tour stop with the Chamber of Commerce

About 30 guests, among them experts for engineering, apparatus construction, ellipsometer, photovoltaics, and pharmaceutics have visited CUI to get insight into the fundamental research. With the slogan “exploring research” the chambers of commerce in Hamburg, Kiel, Lübeck, Lüneburg-Wolfburg and Stade have organized a tour of innovation during the last seven years offering visits to excellent research facilities in the region.

The tour also offered views into CFEL labs

“The north has a lot to offer,” said Dr. Michael Kuckartz, head of the departmentof  innovation, technology and universities at the chamber of commerce in Hamburg during the latest tour stop at the science campus Bahrenfeld. “Ten tour stops within seven years; that makes 70 locations already where excellent research is performed.” Including the Centre for Ultrafast Imaging (CUI).

The idea of the tour of innovation is to offer companies which are interested science an opportunity to get an immediate idea of the scientific competence in the region and to get in contact at the same time. The scientists, on the other hand, are offered the opportunity to present their research.

In his lecture in the Centre for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL) Prof. Horst Weller, Co-speaker of CUI, connected “deep physics with the sickbed”, fundamental research with applications. Weller: We want to find out how nature works, but applications emerge as well.” For example in the field of superconductivity, magnetism, and technology (brilliant displays), in structural biology, for laser surgery or nanomaterials.

After the lecture the guests had the chance to visit several labs. Cornelius Gati, PhD in Prof. Henry Chapman’s Coherent Imaging Group (DESY, Universität Hamburg), and Dr. Michael Heymann, postdoc within the same group, showed some of the CFEL labs. Then Dr. Hermann Franz, deputy director of photon science at DESY explained the PETRA III experimental hall.
