The exhibition “Arts & Science” reveals itself on closer inspection: it presents images from the micro world of scientific fundamental research at the cluster of excellence CUI – wavelike shapes and colour explosions, but also direct images recorded with electron microscopes. There is a lot of room for interpretation and it is up to the observers to just let the beauty of the images sink in or to learn about the physics and chemistry behind the images from the accompanying texts in English and German.
“Arts & Science” is an initiative of the cluster of excellence. The members of CUI were asked to hand it aesthetically appealing pictures – regardless of their scientific significance or newsworthyness. Next the CUI members could make their choice, which was again narrowed down by the organizing team around Prof. Peter Schmelcher; Prof. Julia Lohmann from the University of Fine Arts of Hamburg (HFBK) helped to identify the final selection. The result is a pure aesthetic view on research in natural sciences. Also view: Poster Arts & Science (PDF)
“Arts & Science” was shown for the first time from 1-15 June 2017 in the foyer of Hamburg’s City Hall. It is designed as a traveling exhibition, comprising 30 scientific visualizations, 14 photos of laboratories and experiments plus four information boards. All posters are printed in DIN A1 format on Alu-Dibond (aluminum composite material).
