Moreover the senator pointed to the diverse possibilities of CUI’s future development.

Prof. Heinrich Graener, Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences, picked up the idea of sustainability: He emphasized the importance of informing the broad public about scientific activities – a thought which is very well put into practice in the school lab of “Light & Schools”.

As a highlight of the evening, CUI then honored the two Mildred Dresselhaus Awardees of the year 2014, Dr. Anouk Rijs from the Radboud Universiteit, Netherlands, and Prof. Roseanne Sension from the University of Michigan, USA. In their laudatory speeches Dr. Melanie Schnell and Prof. Arwen Pearson outlined the extraordinary research activities performed by the awardees. Dr. Anouk Rijs then explained her research with the help of a very simple tool: She unwrapped a kinder surprise as she would unwrap molecules, analyze the particles inside und put them together to a structure. Prof. Roseanne Sension regretted not having a similar object, especially since her children loved kinder surprises when they lived in Israel. Both scientists are very much looking forward to their research stay with CUI: The Mildred Dresselhaus program enables internationally outstanding female researchers to spend six months with CUI as a role model and to develop new co-operations.

After the ceremony, CUI speaker Prof. Horst Weller invited the guests to a show of “Science Sensations” including ultrafast snapshots, fluorescent liquids, laser films, protein models, and a high-end microscope to give insight into the CUI research. Food and drinks then offered a good opportunity to establish and intensify contacts.
