CUI Winter school 2013

The first winter school organized by the PhD students of CUI will take place in the period December 2-5, 2013, at the Universitätszentrum Obergurgl (Austria). Invited speakers include experts from CUI as well as other institutions. The scientific programme concerns the following topics: ultrafast spectroscopy, ultracold quantum gases, non-linear optics, microwave spectroscopy of biomolecules, x-ray and electron spectroscopy, magnetic excitations in nanostructures, and experimental techniques to monitor structure formation at the nanoscale.

Invited speakers include:

  • Prof. Dr. S. O. Demokritov (University of Münster, Germany)
  • Prof. Dr. S. Melandri (University of Bologna, Italy)
  • Dr. L. Müller (DESY, Germany)
  • Dr. G. Schneider (Bessy m.b.H., Berlin, Germany)
  • Dr. J. Simonet (University of Hamburg, Germany)
  • Dr. V. Prokhorenko (MPISDM, CFEL, and University of Hamburg, Germany)

CUI Graduate Days 2014

The first Graduate Days of CUI will take place from March 10 to March 12, 2014. The courses are organised as parallel block lectures, with the morning lectures taking place from 9:30 to 12:30 and the afternoon lectures from 14:00 to 17:30, including coffee breaks. The courses runs for three days either in the morning or in the afternoon.

The scientific programme concerns the following topics: superconductivity in mesoscopic systems, ultracold physics in low dimensions, molecular spectroscopy, gas phase molecules and FELs, nucleation and growths of nanoparticles and their applications to materials and life of science, modern methods of X-ray physics, and practical statistics. Besides this, two soft skills courses are organized: presentation skills, and scientific writing and writing for funds.

In addition to the courses, there is a industry presentation of the Philips Medical System (Hamburg) on March 10 (evening), as well as a special colloquium (CUI: Hitchhiker’s Guide to Atom Gazing), which will take place on March 12, 2014.

Invited speakers include:

  • Dr. Fabrizio Dolcini (Department of Applied Science and Technology, Politecnico di Torino, Italy)
  • Prof. Frédéric Merkt (Laboratory of Physical Chemistry, ETH Zürich, Switzerland)
  • Prof. Horst Weller (Fachbereich Chemie, Universität Hamburg, Germany
  • Dr. Manfred Mark (Institute for Experimental Physics, Universität Innsbruck, Austria)
  • Dr. Daniel Rolles (Desy, Hamburg, Germany)
  • Dr. Michael Sprung and Dr. Leonard Müller (Desy, Hamburg, Germany)
  • Prof. Louis Lyons (Imperial College and University of Oxford, United Kingdom)
